Abstract

Background: Spiny amaranth (Amaranthus spinosus L.) is an important weed that can reduce crop productivity through competition for water, nutrients, light, and growing space. Continuous use of synthetic herbicides may cause adverse environmental effects; therefore, more environmentally friendly weed-control alternatives are needed. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of cogongrass rhizome extract (Imperata cylindrica (L.) Raeusch.) as a bioherbicide for controlling spiny amaranth. Methods: The experiment was conducted in the greenhouse of the Indonesian Institute of Palm Oil Technology from March to April 2026 using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with four extract concentrations, namely 0, 250, 500, and 750 g/L, each replicated five times. The observed parameters included weed height, number of leaves, wilting level, and weed mortality percentage. Results: The results showed that the application of cogongrass rhizome extract significantly affected the growth of spiny amaranth. The concentration of 750 g/L produced the strongest inhibitory response, as indicated by the highest wilting level and weed mortality percentage compared with the other treatments. Conclusion: Cogongrass rhizome extract has the potential to be developed as a natural bioherbicide for controlling spiny amaranth. The concentration of 750 g/L showed the highest effectiveness in suppressing weed growth and increasing weed mortality, indicating its potential to support more environmentally friendly weed management.
